It’s almost time for the burning of Zozobra – quite possibly the most beloved Santa Fe event all year!
For those that don’t know: The Burning of Zozobra is a unique cultural event in Santa Fe, NM that can’t be missed!
Created by Will Shuster, a member of an artists group known as Los Cinco Pintores who came to New Mexico in the 1920s, Zozobra first appeared in 1924 as a six-foot puppet, and over the years has grown to a towering 50-foot high marionette made of wood, wire and cotton cloth and stuffed with hundreds of bags of shredded paper and “glooms,” the anxieties, worries and woes of the past year written on paper and destined to burn with Zozobra.
For the last 98 years, the people of Santa Fe, families and friends new and old, have annually made their way to Fort Marcy Park to view this one-of-a-kind, only-in-Santa-Fe pageant.
