Wow. Check out this beautiful image of Lake Katherine shining like an emerald on the east side of Santa Fe Baldy! This photo was taken from the summit of Santa Fe Baldy in July. We just learned that Lake Katherine was named by theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, after his wife, Katherine. It is the largest alpine lake in the Santa Fe Area and you can hike to it from the Winsor Trail Trailhead beginning in the parking lot of the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The hike is 14.5 miles round trip so plan for the whole day or, even better, carry your camping gear, spend the night next to this splendor, and then hike back the next day.
