El Morro National Monument, located south of Grants, is a beautiful mesa with a natural water cache at its base that has drawn travelers to this oasis for centuries. Established in 1906, the monument was established to preserve the petroglyphs and inscriptions at the base of the 200-foot mesa walls as well as the partially excavated pueblo village of A’ts’ina on top of the mesa. A trail runs along the base where you can see the well preserved inscriptions going back several hundred years and continues up to the top of the mesa and along the pueblo ruins.
