Christmas Day Pueblo Dances

Traditionally, Christmas dances at Northern New Mexico pueblos are animal dances honoring such animals as deer and buffalo.  The other dance performed at Christmas is Los Matachines, which is a dance that came to the New World along with the Spanish, and is danced by both Hispanic and Pueblo peoples to this day.

The pueblos listed below traditionally hold dances on Christmas Day:

Cochiti, Ohkay Owingeh, Picuris, Santa Clara, Santa Domigo, San Ildefonso, Taos & Tesuque Pueblos

For more information and to confirm dance times for each pueblo, call before visiting. There are links to each pueblo at the site below and also good tips on appropriate behavior when attending pueblo dances.
