How about a little history? On Jan. 6, 1912: At 1:35 pm in Washington, D.C., President Taft signed the proclamation that made New Mexico a state. A telegram zoomed to outgoing Territorial Gov. William J. Mills, who had his daughter hoist a brand-new 47-star flag over the Capitol to announce the news! The New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe has this 47-star flag on display in its main exhibit, “Telling New Mexico.”
