If you’re looking for an in-town hike that is mostly flat and gets you right out into the beautiful foothills of the Sangres, it’s hard to beat the Dorothy Stewart Trail.
The nearly 2 mile loop affords gorgeous views of Picacho Peak and the Ski Basin, Sun and Moon Mountain, city views with the Jemez Mountains in the background, and the Ortiz and Sandia Mountains.
The only caveat I’ll add is parking is quite limited, although you can check for availability at the Atalaya Trailhead parking up the street, or you can park at St. John’s College and walk up Camino de Cruz Blanca a bit to the trailhead.
